Coccydynia is pain in the lower tailbone at the area where we sit down in the middle lowest part of the spine. It can be from spraining of the sacrococcygeal ligaments or from blunt trauma to the local area such as falling on the tailbone etc.
Treatment:
Treatment is generally supportive with physical therapy, medications, and injections. Positional help is great in helping prevent the pressure on the coccyx/ tail bone and results in decreased stress locally and optimal healing. Sitting evaluation and tail bone confirguration is also important in evaluation. Most patients do extremely well with the above treatment with injections relieving the pain most quickly and efficiently in a safe manner. Cell therapy by injecting the body's own repair cells into the affected area is a new and upcoming latest treatment that holds much promise and can be a life changer in many patients. In some cases surgical removal of the coccyx may be needed to help with the pain.
